Heritage Woodland Sanctuary

Where community & passive recreation come alive!

In 2001, the residents of Lemont set tax dollars aside through an open space referendum to invest in open land and created this community gathering place. Our Sanctuary was created to provide a place where visitors can enjoy nature and escape from our hectic busy lifestyles. Here you will find walking trails that expose you to native plants, restored Illinois prairie grasses and wildlife.

Another goal is to further educate and teach visitors the value of Nature as a routine part of our life. Each year Lemont Township donates hundreds of hours to local non-profits in the use of this community center.

Our seniors gather here daily for a nutritious lunch and fellowship. Four-legged friends enjoy Central Bark Dog Park! Our local food pantry recipients benefit from the I Grow Community Garden on site.

Our Best to you, we hope you leave this place happier and healthier!

All About our Illinois Butterflies

There are approximately 2,000 species of butterflies and moths are found in Illinois. 150 species are butterflies, and 1,850 species are moths.

In their caterpillar stage butterflies and moths eat plant parts and in their adult stage pollinate flowers. These insects are food resources for many birds, mammals, and other arthropods. Numerous species serve as indirect indicators of habitat quality. For example, if the plant species upon which they depend are becoming scarce, these insects may also become fewer in number.
