⚠️ Township staff cannot act as witnesses for your document.
🪪 You must present a government-issued photo ID with your signature.
The purpose of notarization is to help prevent fraud and forgery by verifying the identity of individuals signing documents. A notary public serves as an impartial and official witness to the signing of documents.
Please note that the Township staff who provide notary services are not attorneys licensed to practice law in Illinois. As a result, they:
- Cannot draft legal documents or records.
- Cannot provide legal advice or legal interpretation.
- Cannot advise on immigration matters or any other legal matters.
- Cannot determine which type of notarization is required for a document.
Notary services are provided free of charge, and Township staff do not accept or collect fees for performing notarial acts.
Important Restriction
Lemont Township will not notarize documents that transfer or claim to transfer ownership of residential real property in Cook County. Illinois law requires additional recordkeeping and filing requirements for those transactions, including filing the notarial record with the Cook County Recorder of Deeds and paying a fee. Given these additional obligations, Lemont Township will not notarize any such documents of conveyance.
