The Lemont Township Human Services Department is committed to assisting our residents in need.

The Lemont Township Human Services Department provides financial assistance and referral information to Lemont Township individuals and families during severe economic crisis.

General Assistance

General Assistance is offered to residents of Lemont Township who have no income or financial resources and are not eligible for Federal or State Assistance.  This is a financial aid program that helps residents meet basic needs until employment or another source of income (Social Security, Unemployment, Disability, Public Aid, etc.) is obtained.

Eligibility guidelines are determined by the State of Illinois and Lemont Township. Applicants should have no other potential means of income and should have applied for all possible benefits.

General Assistance applications are available for pickup at the Lemont Township office. The list of required documentation to apply for General Assistance is located here. After completing the application and obtaining all required documentation, an Eligibility Interview appointment should be scheduled at the Lemont Township office.

Emergency Assistance is financial aid granted to qualified individuals and families for two purposes:

  • To help alleviate life-threatening circumstances
  • To help pay work-related expenses necessary to obtain or maintain employment

Eligibility guidelines are determined by the State of Illinois and Lemont Township.  All other available financial resources should be exhausted before applying.  Click here for a list of available resources.

If an individual or family is eligible, they may receive assistance once in a 24-month period to meet basic expenses.

Applicants must apply for General Assistance prior to being determined eligible for Emergency Assistance.  General Assistance applications are available for pickup at the Lemont Township office. After completing the application and obtaining all required documentation, an Eligibility Interview appointment should be scheduled at the Lemont Township office.

Family Assistance is a special fund which began in 2009 and assists Lemont Township residents who may be struggling with paying for medication, utilities, food, housing, or other unexpected expenses that prove to cause a hardship. We are also able to utilize this funding to provide special programs for Lemont Township youth and seniors.

This fund is available because of the generous donations from the Lemont residents. Donations of cash or checks made payable to “Lemont Township Family Assistance Fund” are gladly accepted.

Lemont Township is a service extension unit for Salvation Army. 

Salvation Army Service Units provide individual and emergency services including rent, utilities, and other essentials.

The Salvation Army’s Sharing Program also offers Energy Assistance for Gas Bills which is a one-time yearly grant towards past due gas bills.

Lemont Township partners with CEDA to offer Energy Services such as LIHEAP. This program offers a one-time yearly grant towards Gas and Electricity bills.  CEDA’s Energy Program opens annually on October 1st and will remain open until August 31st of the following year or until funds are exhausted. Annual eligibility appointments are required for this program.  Eligibility documentation includes proof of income, social security card, and current ComEd and Nicor utility bills.

Lemont Township partners with two local food pantries which form the Lemont Township Open Pantries to assist our families in need.

  • Bethany Lutheran Church 500 Lemont St. Lemont, IL 60439 is open Tuesday- Thursday 9:30am-12:30pm.
  • Lemont United Methodist Church 25 West Custer St. Lemont, IL 60439 is open Tuesday – Thursday from 9:45am-11am.

Residents must complete an application in order to attend these pantries. The application can be found here or forms are available in office for pickup.

To continue assisting families in our community, donations of all kinds are accepted and appreciated. However, there is a particular need for the following items:

  • canned meats such as tuna, chicken, and Spam
  • hearty soups such as Progresso or Campbell Chunky
  • kid-friendly snacks such as chips, fruit snacks, or applesauce pouches
  • coffee, tea, and K-cup pods
  • condiments such as ketchup, sugar, creamer, and vegetable oil
  • personal care items such as household supplies, shampoo, deodorant, and toilet paper

All donations may be dropped off at the Food Pantry during its hours of operation as listed above.

Monetary donations of cash or checks made payable to Lemont Township notated Food Pantry are gladly accepted. The food pantries also accept direct monetary donations.

Drivers’ Safety Class

This two-day class is designed to help older drivers improve their skills and safety behind- the-wheel. Course completion may qualify participants for a discount on the liability portion of their automobile insurance.

The class is held at the Lemont Township Police Department, 14600 E 127th St, Lemont, IL 60439. The two-day sessions are typically held from noon to 4 p.m. each day and participants must attend both days. The fee is $20 for AARP members ($25 for non-members) and is payable to the instructor on the first day of class.

Lemont Township can assist residents with obtaining the Illinois Department on Aging’s Benefit Access Program. This allows the Illinois Secretary of State’s office to provide reduced-fee license plate stickers from $150 to $10 for senior citizens 65 and older and persons with disabilities who meet specific financial requirements.  The total Gross Income limit is $33,562 for a 1-person household or $44,533 for a 2-person household.

An application must be submitted online at the Illinois Department on Aging’s website. Paper applications are not available. For more information or if additional assistance is required, call the Lemont Township office at (630) 257-2522.

Lemont Township works closely with the Lemont Township Senior Association. This association has been in existence since July 18, 1974. The organizations’ goal is to promote and provide services and activities to enrich the social lives of anyone 60 and older. The annual membership fee for this organization is $15.00. Monthly meetings are hosted on the 1st Monday of the month at the Lemont Township Community Center, along with many other parties throughout the year. If you are looking to meet new people, make new friends, get out and socialize, the Lemont Township Senior Citizen Association is for you. The Senior Citizen Association is not funded or run by Lemont Township, however, we are a liaison for them and assist with events. We can also answer any questions you may have.

Summer Lunch Program

Lemont Township assists families with ensuring parents are able to provide lunches for their children throughout the summer. Lemont Township knows and understands the difficulties of providing nutritious lunch meals for families especially with rising food costs. This program provides monthly gift cards to help alleviate some of these expenses.

Lemont Township residents must be registered with the Lemont Township Open Pantries in order to participate in this program. Registration for this program becomes available at the end of April each year. 

Generously funded by residents of the community, Lemont Township’s Giving Tree Program assists families in need with providing Christmas presents for their children during the holidays.  This program also helps provide gift card donations to seniors in need.  In order to be eligible, residents must register with the Lemont Township Open Pantries and complete any additional documentation. This documentation is available at the end of September and must be turned in by the first week of November yearly.
